What actually happens
There are three separate routes, and the ballot is the least reliable. Advance tee times are booked directly with St Andrews Links Trust or through Authorised Providers and sell out fast. The daily ballot is drawn two days ahead — entries for Wednesday close Monday at 2pm, results around 4pm — and takes groups of 2–4 only. Single golfers cannot enter that ballot at all and must use the separate singles route. The Old Course is closed on Sundays, and 2027 brings an extended closure from mid-June to late July for The Open.
