St Andrews Links — The Old Course

The Old Course is golf’s closest thing to a pilgrimage site — and it plays nothing like you expect. The fairways are comically wide, shared between outward and inward holes, with no clear line from tee to green until you’ve played it a few times. The hazards are invisible until you’re in them: the Principal’s Nose bunker cluster on 16, Hell Bunker yawning at the base of the 14th fairway, the 7-foot deep Strath bunker guarding the 11th green. The 17th — the Road Hole — is the most discussed par 4 in the world. The Road Bunker on the front of the green is a near-vertical face; there are players who have taken 9 or 10 from there.
How to Play It
Route 1: The Daily Ballot
Submit online or by phone before 2pm for the following day. Results published at 4pm. Peak summer ballot success rates run roughly 1-in-4 on a busy week. Shoulder season (April–May and September–October) runs 50–70%. Don’t plan flights around the ballot alone.
Route 2: Licensed Golf Tour Operator

The Championship Links has blind tee shots, cavernous bunkers cut into dunes, and greens that tilt in ways that defy reading. The 3rd and 9th are two of the great par fives anywhere. Visitor Days: Weekdays Only
Royal County Down is a members’ club. Visitors are welcome on weekdays — Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays have most visitor availability. Saturday and Sunday are members-only. Book at least 6 months ahead for peak season (June–August). Green fees run approximately £225–£250 in summer.
The Slieve Donard Hotel
The resort-adjacent Slieve Donard often has tee time packages for hotel guests, including some weekend access that is otherwise impossible for visitors. If Royal County Down is the centrepiece of your Ireland trip, build around a stay here.
